Why put all this attention towards having a calm and balanced dog?
You'll feel better! We can also absorb agitation from our dog in much the same way we 'pick up' agitation from someone we are around who is highly stressed. The very good news is that by providing the right amount and type of focused exercise for your dog can result in a material effect on your state of calm and balance. a calm dog has a calming effect on you.
How do I know when my dog has had enough?
As your dog settles into their "migratory pace" (like a wolf trotting 40 kms to find food each day) you soon notice a change as they shift into a relaxed state. It shows in their appearance. The dog that whines at the beginning become quiet; the dog that strains forwards agains the leash, settles onto a loose leash; the anxious dog's tail comes up and might even wag and the fearful look in their eyes softens. This is the goal and a sign that finally they have let go and are relaxing. The time it takes for each dog to reach this state perceptibly differs. All you need to do is wait and watch them let go and relax into this normal and instinctively statisfying state. Should your dog begin to lag back and cannot maintain the speed, we reduce it to a more comfortable pace until they complete their time. Even if that is just a walk, this allows them to cool down.
The main objective is to allow this focused exercise to get each dog to this relaxed internal place; becoming more balanced having expended any energy that might otherwise be channeled into unwanted behaviours.
With this kind of exercise program on a regular basis (two or three times per week or more) your dog becomes calmer and content all the time. They also become more at ease socializing with other dogs; in this state they are maleable to train paying better attention to commands, training sessions achieve higher success.
